Arnold and Platurn will be in store from 6pm to 8pm to sign CDs and limited edition posters – FREE to the first 50 people to purchase CDs. Proto-rappers like Pigmeat Markham and Gil Scott-Heron are included\, alongside seminal breakbeats by the Incredible Bongo Band\, James Brown\, the Skull Snaps\, and Dennis Coffey; classic funk by Cymande and Parliament; electro-boogie and electro-funk from Kraftwerk\, Jonzun Crew\, and Herbie Hancock; old school rap by Run-DMC\, the Funky Four +1\, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five; classic rap sides from Digital Underground\, Del the Funky Homosapien\, Too Short\, Latyrx\, and LL Cool J\, and much\, much more. More than 50 songs are included in the 80-minute mix\, produced and executed by DJ Platurn of the Oakland Faders/45 Sessions. \nAs a special bonus\, the miixCD features found sound bites from various sources\, including television news programs\, cult classic movies\, comedy shows\, political speeches\, and even NASA space launches\, impart additional historical and social context. Designer Marlon Sagana Ingram (Studio MSI) freaked Arnold’s original photography into an Afrofuturist-inspired package which invoked the theme of balancing tradition with technology. \nThe result\, the “Respect” mix CD\, is more than just a mixtape –it’s a cultural artifact which captures the essence of a youth movement which has become a global phenomenon.
