DJ PLATURNOakland, CA.

DJ – Producer -Record Collector – Promoter

DJ Platurn is a 24-year veteran of the music industry whose work has taken him all over the globe— Asia, Australia, Europe, Canada, South America, Scandinavia, and countless venues throughout the US as well as his home base in the San Francisco Bay Area. A native of Iceland, his handle is a literal translation that fittingly means “Plate Turner.” With a substantive client list including Red Bull, Toyota, Pandora, Adidas, Pixar, Monster Cable, MTV, Rane, and the Golden State Warriors (amongst others) he’s built a reputation as a tastemaker and community advocate for his hometown of Oakland, preserving crucial aspects of DJ culture as founder of the Oakland Faders (with partner DJ Spair) and The 45 Sessions (founded in 2010) which is now recognized as the preeminent outlet for 7-inch (45-rpm) culture on the West Coast United States.

Platurn has played alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, including De La Soul, Prince Paul, A-Trak (Fools Gold), Janelle Monae, Z-Trip, Fishbone, ?uestlove (The Roots), DJ Premier (Gang Starr), MF Doom, Pete Rock, Mixmaster Mike (Beastie Boys), Nu-Mark (Jurassic Five), DJ Craze, Zion I & The Grouch, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Das Efx, Hieroglyphics, Boot Camp Click, DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill), Jazzy Jay, DJ Scratch (EPMD), Spinderella (Salt & Pepa), and many more.

In addition to being an avid record collector and DJ, Platurn has also collaborated with filmmakers, producing original music for award winning documentarians, Grammy nominated vocalists, and groundbreaking visual artists. He also composed score to the feature length documentary A Lovely Day (as The Midnite Sons) and was a musical contributor to Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes, & Life.

This year, he released a lifetime’s worth of obscure, groove-based Icelandic music from his and his father’s record collection, expertly aligning songs onto a project called Breaking The Ice, released on Needle To The Groove records in 2018. Platurn’s attention to detail and relentless work ethic has gained him notoriety for over two decades—with much more on the horizon.
