SUMMARY:Basura w/ Mark Farina / Arturo Garces @ The Ritz
DESCRIPTION:Spaceland Presents \n\n\n\nMark Farina \n\n\n\nArturo Garces \n\n\n\nDJ Basura \n\n\n\nSaturday // 10.19.19 // 8PM // 21+$16.50 Advance // $20 Day-of-Show \n\n\n\nMark Farina Bio:Mark Farina has solidified himself in the world of Dance Music as a trailblazing DJ\, Producer\, tastemaker and bona fide House Music icon. After 3 decades crisscrossing the globe\, he shows no signs of slowing down remaining innovative\, humble\, and firmly rooted in the underground.“I look at my job as a ‘modern day traveling minstrel’ bringing new music to as many places as I can and exposing audiences to obscure records that otherwise might go hidden.”As an early House Music pioneer in the late 80’s\, Farina’s history includes an impressive long standing residency at Smart Bar Chicago and a job at the legendary Gramaphone Records. In the 90s\, Mark pushed musical boundaries and blended hip hop with downtempo grooves to create an entirely new genre\, “Mushroom Jazz”. Eventually\, Mark made San Francisco his home as his legendary DJ sets sparked a constant demand in clubs and festivals across the US. The Bay Area proved to be a perfect match for Mark’s musical vision and he released a string of major mix compilations including his Mushroom Jazz series. With a tireless passion for playing extended sets\, B2B shows with fellow House Music icons\, or playing both of his signature styles on 2 stages on the same night\, Farina continues to entertain his incredible fans all over the globe with over 100 shows per year. 2019 is shaping up to be one of Mark’s best ever as he continues to push his label\, Great Lakes Audio Recordings\, to ever greater heights. He’ll continue to crisscross the country playing club dates at top venues and he’s set to perform at Sonic Bloom Festival in June\, West Fest Chicago in July\, and Defected Croatia in August. This year will also provide all of his fans and music lovers everywhere with the next chapter in the MJ series\, Mushroom Jazz 9!

His 2011 Backyard Boogie release expanded his following internationally\, topping Billboard and iTunes charts in a number of countries. His 2014 EP “Live Up!” earned him a Top 5 spot on the Reggae Albums charts. \n\n\n\n NTTG Players are a DJ collective who specialize in playing old vinyl records. DESCRIPTION:Gurpwinos Party + “Happy Hour” @ F8 \n\n\n\nFeaturing \n\n\n\n S. Brothers (Like Sick & DJ Marz)Harkening back to a simpler time when hip-hop was comprised of party rhymes and recognizable sounds\, the almighty S Brothers are here with a maxi-single-style release that will have you dusting off your Walkman. Luke Sick (Sacred Hoop\, Grand Invincible) and Doug Surreal (Jack Spaar\, Motel Crew)\, two Bay Area underground hip-hop vets\, approached this project as a way to pay homage to the Megamix era of hip-hop\, about 1988-1991. Beyond just a good listening experience\, well-versed hip-hop heads will have fun spotting all of the various references and callbacks to classic jams. Luke himself says it best when describing this tape as “the kind of hip-hop that made you fall in love with hip-hop.” \n\n\n\nWith DJ Toph One & DJ MarzFree from 5pm to 9pmlow key hip hop party@ FB 1192 Folson SF https://sbrothers.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:NTTG & Wax Wednesday with Casual Crypt & S. Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Needle to the Groove proudly introduces two new artists: \n\n\n\nCasual Crypt – lo-fi psych rockCasual Crypt is the side-project of Li Xi’s synth & drone specialist\, James Vernon. Late in 2018\, he locked himself in the basement of an old industrial warehouse in the foothills of a non-descript coastal California town. The area is still tested by local environmental agencies for tetra-chlorethylene and local residents have been evacuated due to chemical exposure. Vernon unpacked his studio and composed a bedroom odd pop symphony recorded to his Tascam 4-trak tape recorder. Psyched out by his solitude & delusional absence from all worldly things\, Casual Crypt emerged spreading his lo-fi psych radio waves via telekinesis. \n\n\n\nRIYL: Ty Segall\, Tame Impala\, Kurt Vile\, Shannon & the Clams\, Ariel Pink \n\n\n\n& \n\n\n\nS. Brothers – analog rapHarkening back to a simpler time when hip-hop was comprised of party rhymes and recognizable sounds\, the almighty S Brothers are here with a maxi-single-style release that will have you dusting off your Walkman. Luke himself says it best when describing this tape as “the kind of hip-hop that made you fall in love with hip-hop.” \n\n\n\nRIYL: Mantronix\, Edan\, Beastie Boys\, The Dust Brothers\, The Bomb Squad\, Cash Money & Marvelous\, Lord Finesse \n\n\n\nWax Wednesdays @ Cafe StritchSJ’s longest running old school vinyl party! Wax Wednesdays is a weekly night of music at Cafe Stritch\, SJ’s leading Jazz club. This event is FREE & All ages. Needle to the Groove hosts the 2nd Wednesday of each month with live music from our label & our dj crew the NTTG Players. \n\n\n\nCome thru & hang.www.needletothegroove.net

SUMMARY:Aki Kumar @ Yerba Buena Gardens Festival
DESCRIPTION:AKI KUMAR\n\n\n\nDATE: Jul 18TIME: 12:30pm – 1:30pmVENUE: Esplanade\, Yerba Buena GardensMission St. between 3rd & 4th Sts\, San Francisco\, CAPHONE: (415) 543-1718COST: Free www.akikumar.com \n\n\n\n“…breathtaking…”- Living Blues Magazine“Check it out. I wouldn’t steer you wrong.” – Charlie Musselwhite“Kumar is on the cutting-edge of blues today.”- Michael Kinsman\, San Diego Blues Festival \n\n\n\nAbout Aki Kumar: \n\n\n\nIndian-born\, San Jose-based Aki Kumar\, aka “The Only Bombay Blues Man\,” left his home in Mumbai for the United States with the intention of working as a software engineer. Then he discovered the blues\, and his life dramatically changed. \n\n\n\nWith his Little Village Foundation debut\, “Aki Goes to Bollywood”\, Kumar began integrating elements of Indian music into his musical and visual presentation\, making for a multi-cultural mash-up that sounds like no one else\, yet never loses touch with its blues foundation. Kumar’s follow-up album\, “Hindi Man Blues”\, boasts his most ambitious cross-cultural fusion to date\, and features liner notes by veteran blues great Charlie Musselwhite. Kumar recently performed at the prestigious Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival\, has been featured on PRI “The World\,” and has toured in Russia\, South America and Scandinavia. \n\n\n\nHailed as a star among the next generation of West Coast blues artists and versatile in many different styles of roots music\, Kumar is equally at ease rocking a Jimmy Reed number in English as he is belting out a signature\, swingin’ re-interpretation of a Bollywood classic in Hindi. Cleverly crafted originals featuring his masterful blues harmonica riffs are a highlight of this charismatic entertainer’s live performances. \n\n\n\n“(Kumar) has a natural propensity for the music\, with a rich\, deep tone and a sensitive\, economic style that emphasizes feel over flash.” Jonny Whiteside\, LA TIMES

SUMMARY:Valley Wolf\, Davila666\, San Pedro El Cortez
DESCRIPTION:Davila 666 regresa a Tijuana \n\n\n\nUna banda mutante conformada por integrantes de otros proyectos boricuas. Su andar comenzó en el 2005 gracias a su cantante Sir. Charles\, quien consiguió reunir a AJ Davila\, GiGi Davila\, Johnny Otis Davila\, Panda Davila y The Latin Snake.

SUMMARY:Aki Kumar @ Sound Room
DESCRIPTION:June 29Aki KumarAdvance Seating 7p; Gen Admit 7:30p; Music 8p  \n\n\n\nAfter more than a decade of playing with top-notch blues musicians and recording a rock-solid first album Don’t Hold Back (which garnered widespread accolades\, ranging from the Los Angeles Times to Dan Aykroyd)\, Kumar is taking his love for the blues to unexpected places.  It’s Mumbai meets Muddy Waters\, says Kumar\, who reworked Hindi-language hits from big names in Indian pop music  Kishore Kumar\, Mohammed Rafi\, and Mukesh  and made them his own.“Aki Kumar is at it again playing music in a genre that he alone inhabits. This Indian born\, and San Jose\, California based\, blues man is doing something that has never been done or likely even considered. In 2016\, Kumar released an album called Aki Goes To Bollywood. Here in 2018\, with Hindi Man Blues\, he continues this wild exploration into the music of his homeland and combining those thematic musical elements with the blues music of his adopted country. While this record may not be for everyone\, it is for those with an open mind and adventurous spirit. Either way\, Aki Kumar should be applauded for choosing his own path which speaks to the height of creativity and fearlessness.”David Mac. Blues Junction Productions\, July 2018
